GDCU: First Post 0
Info EN: Although the regular language of this Blog is German, I decided to write the posts regarding the Game Designs Concepts Course in English. As the course itself is in English as well, it enables the other participants to read and maybe discuss my posts. All posts regarding the GDCU are labelled with the according category for easy access.
GDCU: First Post
Finally the GDCU starts! I have to admit I’m pretty excited about this and can’t wait to experiment and learn with all of you.
The first post of the GDCU first deals with administrative stuff and explains Ians background again. Then it jumps right into the juicy stuff by discussing the definition of what a game is. In that regard, I already got my eye opener in the form of Jesper Juuls “half-real”. It really helped me understand what game design really is. Not so much how Game Design works, but what the essence of it is. I “got” it.
Although I mostly agree with Ians definition / adjectives of a game, there is another definition that I found very attractive and made me think for a while. This one is by Sid Meier: “A [good] game is a series of interesting choices“. Simple and elegant and in my opinion while incomplete it is very interesting.
I did not know Greg Costikyans “I Have No Words & I Must Design” but I liked it a lot. He throws around so many examples and makes a good point by explaining them in a simple and visual language.
But I did know the great “Understanding Games” series. But Part Three still gets on my nerves for not letting me skip the game.
I really liked this kickoff post and I look forward to the things to come.
